Rollover!

Ladybug Pup Ladybug Pup

Rollover! Good doggie!
Teach your dog how to rollover.

Rollover tends to be more difficult for adult dogs than it is for puppies. Therefore if you are working with a full grown adult ensure you do not force anything. Have patience and understanding please.

STEP 1. Two things will bring out the best responses for "rollover". Make sure your dog has exercised a bit so that he isn't intent on popping up right away. And make sure also that he is hungry so that he will be focused on your treat, which is the make or break item for this entire process.

STEP 2. Have your dog lay down, preferably with his back legs both facing to the right or to the left. (See images below.) Otherwise it will be difficult to lure him. Though later when the dog knows this command well, it won't matter so much.

Not a good way to start rollover for a beginner. This a better way to start rollover as a beginner.

STEP 3. Have your delicious treat prepared and let your dog know you've got it. Keep the treat semi close to your dog's body and slowly pull the treat down from his nose (he should begin to follow it). Next, drag it across his front sideways in the direction in which is back feet are pointed. (In the image above, you would drag the treat toward the right.) Continue dragging the treat slowly over his side and toward his back. (See image below.) He should begin to show his tummy if you're doing it correctly.

Make sure his nose is following the treat!

STEP 4. Once he begins to show his stomach (as he would if he wanted you to pet it), simply lure him the rest of the way over and command "Rollover".

Repeat these steps over and over until your dog understands what you are asking him to do. Chances are, in the beginning this command will be unnerving to your dog, so be gentle and patient!
